Nope, we could not, we are a supposedly multi-cultural society, we embrace other cultures and their religions, we live and let live.
The US whilst being multi-cultural, clings onto it's christian values at the exclusion of all others.
They pay lip service to the experiment which is multi-culturalism, Whilst Britain does everything it can to accommodate other races and their religions even at the expense of the majority.

Oh good point - I was focusing on the fairly recent stuff about Tony Blair and his beliefs and got side-tracked.
Whilst yer at it tho - are the US then not being slightly more true to themselves then - although, as you say they are paying lip service to the multi-culturalism - as they are clinging on to their original christian values? This country cannot make up it's mind and jumps on any passing bandwagon.

The US clings onto it's status as a Christian country, yes they are being true to themselves.
Britain is a work in progress as to whether Multi-culturalism will work and going by recent events it has been an unmitigated disaster.

I think it always will be an unmitigated disaster - there should be tolerance but Britain should stand firm on who it is. At the moment it is getting mighty confused and doing no-one any favours.

It's interesting to see you all discuss this. I'm not trying to sound facetious. Being from the US, I can only interject my own opinion and that is this...the US was born with the principle that no one should be persectuted for holding a particular religious belief. Our laws are based on Christian values primarily because the founding fathers were Christian themselves, therefore, inheriting the label "Christian country". Since the time of its conception, the US has welcomed peoples of different religions and has allowed them to practise their faith freely. In recent times, however, there have been folks that disagree with inclusion of the word "God" in several historical documents, voluntary prayer in school, religious scripture and displays of the Ten Commandments in public buildings. Because of this, teachers and other educators cannot voice any sort of prayer or scripture unless the student(s) ask them to. Many professionals are not allowed to comfort those who ask for prayer. Those who do have Christian beliefs are essentially gagged. "Merry Christmas" is replaced with "Happy Holidays" to appease the mass religious beliefs held at that time. I have yet to see anyone be forced to accept the Christian religion over here. Perhaps, it is the Christians who will be forced to hide their beliefs.

unfortunately that has been the outcome in a lot of countries around the world, so i don't think it will be to long untill that statement becomes more of a reality.

So effectively banning the promotion of Christianity in schools, etc the US rather than being a country embracing other cultures and religions it has become one of appeasement rather like the UK.

This is just history repeating itself. The strongest religion will win out in the end and it just goes round and round. I don't have a religious bone in my body but that counts for nothing cos "we all have to believe in something".
